Yesturday, on the radio, I had the “pleasure” of listening to several people complain about how little help they’ve received and how much they deserve from the government for all they’ve suffered after Katrina.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree that the government has some questions to answer, but come on… deserve?

I don’t recall people talking about what “they were entitled to” after the tsunami. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of a famine survivor complaining that the help they received wasn’t as much as they “deserved.”

Of course not!

But 911…yep: lot’s of “we deserve….”
Hurricane Katrina…yep: all kinds of “we’re entitled….”

Should we be helping people who are suffering? Duh! Of course we should!
Do we have the resources in the US to prevent much of the suffering in the world? Duh! Of course we do!

But deserve? Come on! This entitlement thing isn’t very attractive.
