To Torture or Not
For some reason, that is the question.
What reason? I’m not sure. I would think even a cursory evaluation of the corpus of the scriptures would be enough for even the most stubborn people to recognize that the practice of torture is simply not congruent with the Christian faith. Yet the church has remained essentially silent. Disappointing.
The National Religious Campaign Against Torture has developed a simple, yet powerful statement against the practice of torture, in any form.

Yes, you would think that Christians, and devout theists in general, would oppose torture as inconsistent with the nature of a merciful God. But it’s probably too much to expect of someone who thinks President Bush is God’s anointed. Furthermore, the post-9/11 media seem to have convinced many of us that torture is necessary.
There’s a very disturbing article at the National Catholic Reporter, which has been picked up on by Andrew Sullivan, whose musings have been picked up in turn by Salon.
What neither I nor my pastor understand is why the ELCA officialdom haven’t adopted the anti-torture cause “in a heartbeat.” They’re not exactly right-wing fundies.
All this is fodder for militant atheists, who love to crow about how Christianity is inherently the religion of the Inquisition.
