Sex Metaphors

Religious June 18th, 2006

I know my opinion means practically nothing to our synodical or classical leadership but, for what its worth, I detest the use of sexual metaphors for discussions of church planting.

I have actually heard the following used in this context:

birthing
delivery room
parenting
mothering
conceiving
siblings
…and a few others

For the record…ick!

I have massive doubts regarding the biblicity of church planting as “conceived” by many in the contemporary church but regardless of that, I’m simply not convinced that this is an appropriate metaphorical expression of what church-founding is all about.

The idea that my congregation and another ought to “join together” (copulate?) and “birth” a new congregation simply doesn’t seem right. Our world is already obsessed with sex, isn’t this going too far?!

Grace and Peace,
`tim

  1. James Brumm Says:

You should hear Al Janssen’s riff on how all the church multiplication discussions make him think about soft lighting, candles, etc. Given the portions of the RCA that seem to talk of nothing but this and the sexuality of ministers, it amazes me that I am considered to be among the liberals.
