Today I Start…

Religious August 14th, 2006

It is official, today I start a week long study of Mercersburg Theology. Honesty demands I admit beginning the readings weeks ago, but today marks the “nose to the grindstone” period.

I normally find educational time emotionally demanding but otherwise relaxing and rejuvenating. this week may be an exception regarding the later two (I preach Sunday, had a wedding last weekend and another this coming weekend – none of which I regret, though all of which demand time and energy) but I look forward to it nonetheless.

The readings I’ve engages thus far are exhilarating! If you know nothing about Phillip Schaff or John Nevin you simply must check them out. They are “postmodern” before their time; they are liturgically aware and sacramentally savvy before the liturgical renewal; they recognized the inherent heresy in American religious sectarianism, and they do it all in a way that is remarkably readable (especially for writings written about 15 decades ago!)

On a completely different note; I had the privilege of meeting Bart Fisher this past weekend. He is an up and coming screen writer and director who has worked on such projects as “Blade Trinity” - a film that, in my opinion, almost single-handedly took “vampire movies” out of the Bram Stoker era. (OK, perhaps it’s just one of the many currently breaking out of the old mold. Honestly though, the Blade characters are whole new beasts…nothing like you’ll find anywhere else. Imagine a strange mixture of Alien and Queen of the Damned….) In any case, check him out at:

Mark these words: you will hear more of him!

Grace and Peace,
