Valentine’s Blech
Call me unromantic - it’s probably a fair label. I detest Valentine’s Day. I love my wife and daughter (although the later has been getting up in a scream at about 3:00 am every night for the past 3 months), but I loathe the holiday.
I don’t suppose I need to go into all the reasons. It boils down to the thinly veiled materialism and the over-priced wastefulness. Yes, I occasionally buy some chocolate or flowers or cards. The desire to express love is sometimes greater than the desire to boycott the awfulness of this holiday… (no longer a holy-day).
Today, at least, I won’t wear all black - It’s too depressing for my wife.
Grace and Peace,

Oh, Tim . . . this time I think you need to get over it just a little bit. You’re right about all the ways this day has been co-opted, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate (otherwise, Christmas and Easter are gone for us, too). Use it as an excuse to lavish a bit more attention on your dear wife (something that ministry and parenthood interferes with all too much); get her a little something (flowers and candy if that’s her thing, or something else), have a nice quiet dinner, tell folks you just can’t go to meetings for one night because, after all, it is Valentine’s Day. Most of all, spend time with your beloved, just because you can.
