Wanted to like it.. but….

Knitting & Tatting February 18th, 2008

Have you ever seen something that you really wanted to like, but the reality wasn’t nearly what you’d hoped for.

Well, that was my experience with Crystal Palace Yarn’s “Maizy.” I picked up a 50 g. ball (205 yards… sock weight) the other day at Allegan’s new LYS: Books, Coffee & Friends (actually, it’s an older establishment, but under new ownership it now carries a small selection of yarn and bamboo needles). I’m an Iowa boy… any yarn made primarily out of corn (82%) immediately tugs on my heart strings; indeed, I’ve actually added the stuff to online shopping carts several times but never actually gone through with the purchase. In short, I REALLY wanted to like it. The color is cool; the drape is fun; it’s soft, but I REALLY didn’t like working it up. It came unraveled too easily; it was awkward - I don’t know what else to say about it. That said, I don’t think Phia will mind! She got a pair of socks out of the deal:

Now, to figure out what to do with the rest of it?!

Grace and Peace,

`tim

PS… Don’t think the theological implications of this post are lost on me… I’ll just resist the urge right now.

I haven’t played with any Ingeo yarns, but have felt some fabrics made with cotton/Ingeo blends. The biggest problem with most plant-based yarns is that they tend to be very splitty by virtue of their lack of anything resembling elasticity. I think you’d pretty much need to have a braided yarn to eliminate that problem, but those seem to be very rare. Which is why I stick to animal fibers, generally.
