Knitting & Tatting March 20th, 2008

Well, I did it. I finished the Baby Surprise Jacket. This is one of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s classic patterns - her first infant design, I believe and the first time I’ve worked up one of her patterns. It’s a bizarre pattern, by all definitions. The whole thing is made in a single piece, folded up with a crazy, pretzel-style flip, and then sewn along the top of both sleeves. It only took me about a week to knit up - I started it on Monday and finished it today - it would have taken me longer, but I didn’t sleep well all week.

The most important thing about working this pattern is to be entirely unintuitive. Follow the pattern. Don’t think about it. Do what it says, nothing different. I’d read this before starting, so that’s what I did. Everyone was right. And it’s fun too.

This is made from Knit PicksSwish Superwash (100% superwash wool) in the colors Ballerina (2 balls) and Bubblegum (1 ball) on US size 6 needles. It’s great yarn. Soft, easy to work, didn’t unravel while knitting. This was the first time I’d ordered from knitpicks.com — I’ll DEFINITELY use them again!

If you’re interested in the pattern, it’s available from Schoolhouse Press here (only $3!) And if you’re a knitter - give it a try. It’s a blast.

It’s actually for a young couple in our church who are “expecting.” They’ve been told they’re having a girl and the ladies are having a shower Saturday morning at church for them (well, for the mother.) :-)

A blessed Good Friday to you, as well!

[…] I know, it looks a LOT like the last one I made (I used the same yarn) but I found some really fun little engraved heart buttons… neat, huh?  I actually don’t think it turned out as well as the last one, but I’m still happy with it.  This is a great pattern (info at the post from the last one I made)!  It’s for one of my wife’s colleagues.
