General Synod Starts
Well… It’s is officially started. The Rev. John Ornee called the 202nd General Synod of the Reformed Church in America to order during worship last night at Dimnet Chapel. It was hot and the humidity hung around 99%, but worship was beautiful, well planned and the preaching, delivered by the Rev. En Young Kim from Closter Reformed Church in New Jersey, was enjoyable.
Opening Worship, besides being the official “beginning” of Synod, was also an opening communion service (as it always is). This year, unlike last year, it was well balanced stylistically as well as linguistically, and flowed well. Worship is being planned primarily this year by the Rev. Ron Rienstra, who besides being a PhD candidate at Fuller was once my college chaplain at Central College!
The world is a small place. So is the RCA (in some ways, although there are around 950 congregations in the denomination). The Seminarian Seminar, which I’ve been facilitating for the past several days, has a former college classmate of mine in it (whom I haven’t seen in 13 years!) and the younger brother of one of my high school classmates.
Yesterday, I turned around to see one of the little golf carts (who are constantly driving delegates from one place to another) and saw Bill VanDyk driving it! I expect I’ll see him again today.
In any case. If you’re in Holland, feel free to join us and watch what’s going on. Otherwise, I’lll post more later.
Grace and Peace,
`tim

I’m thinking of you Tim — kind of wondering (but not too hard) WHICH of the 4 Bill Van Dyk’s that I know you saw?
Probably not even one of the ones I know.
One of the things that I’m noticing in NY, is that I’m noticing a Dutch name — as that of real person — not just a place with more attention. In Holland, you never even notice “Oh, that’s a Dutch name” — because there are so many of them. Duh. . .
