It’s official!
It’s official. They’ve just announced what we all obviously expected. The Rev. Dr. Carol Bechtel is now officially elected as General Synod president starting tomorrow evening, when she will be installed.
Carol was one of my preaching profs at Western Seminary and a professor whom I have great respect for. She will also be the first female Minister of Word and Sacrament to be General Synod President and the first General Synod Professor of Theology to take the position. (Although she is not the first woman to fill the job.)
There are few people more well suited to the job. She is cued into to ecumenical work, well educated and experienced in worship, an incredible thinker and a wonderful teacher.
Congratulations General Synod — You did a good job!
Carol has already announced that her emphases will be:
- Education
- Worship, and
- Reconciliation
What a wonderful, and wise balance of foci.
