An Historic Event, corrected…
Let me officially stand corrected. I said that The Rev. Dr. James Seawood will be the first African-American (vice)president of the Reformed Church in America. I was wrong. The first African-American President in the RCA was the Rev. Wilbur Washington, who was elected president in 1988.
If you’re not part of the RCA it may seem odd that we tend to interchange vice-president and president. Here’s why: The nomination process ends up electing the vice-president and then, the next year, the vice-president is the only person on the ballot for the presidential election. To be elected vice-president is essentially a three year commitment. The first years s/he serves as vice-president, the second year as president, and the third year as outgoing president (which involves work on the General Synod Council - the board that essentially runs the RCA when the General Synod isn’t in session).
Grace and Peace,
`tim
