Non-equi-poly-phasic Sleeping…

Polyphasic Sleep June 14th, 2008

How’s that for a mouthfull?  In short, it’s a long way of referring to a Non-Equiphasic and Polyphasic sleep schedule.  Polyphasic sleep schedules are those where an individual’s sleep a patterns are adjusted to more than one “chunk” of sleeping time (for example, in some countries there is a large night-time sleep AND an hour or longer “siesta” sleep).  If the “chunks” are even, they’d be “equiphasic” if they’re not they’re “non-equiphasic.”  So…  A non-equi-poly-phasic sleep schedule is one where an individual takes multiple (but not equally balanced) sleep times.

All of which is a long way of introducing something I’m going to try.  Yep.  The version I’m going to give a try to is often referred to as the “everyman” schedule (as opposed to the “uberman” schedule).  Uberman is entirely about powernaps (usually 6 carefully scheduled throughout each day).  Everyman adapts that nap-based schedule and includes a “core nap” along with several carefully scheduled naps.  My version will have a core nap and three relatively-evenly scheduled other naps.

Why?  Because I can use the extra time.  Part of it’s a stewardship thing.  I need a certain amount of sleep.  But I think that much of my sleep is low-level.  This tries to focus sleep and teach the body to fall into it quickly and use it effectively.

I’m under the impression that the initial adaption period can be a little frustrating, and I’m willing to find out that it doesn’t work for me, but I’m going to give it a try anyhow.  That means, among other things, that I may be blogging more in these next couple of weeks… but conceivably, those late-night-adaptation blogs may be less intelligible! :-)

I’ll keep you posted!

Grace and Peace,

Maybe I should try that, since I clearly don’t have anything approaching a normal circadian rhythm (I told someone earlier today that it’s syncopated.) Of course, I can’t even schedule in a powernap when I’m working my 15 hr shifts, since I never know what I’ll be doing from one night to another.

UPDATE: Ok… I haven’t really started yet. Apparently our dear Phia isn’t being cooperative with the whole core-nap thing. Oh well. Maybe some time.
