Joy, for those of us how know how it ends. Fear, for those who first experienced it. Here’s the litany I wrote as the beginning of yesterday’s Sunrise service. Feel free to use, if you find it helpful (I’d love to know if you do). I’ll add chords to the lead-sheet and post them later.


Easter Sunrise Opening Litany

Opening Litany (Mark 16:1-8, NRSV)
L: When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome brought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.

Refrain: Where is the Body? (verse 1)

L: They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.

Refrain: Where is the Body? (verse 2)

L: As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Refrain: Where is the Body? (verse 2)

L: That first morning, we remember, was not so joyful. We know that Jesus had risen, but they did not. They knew only that the body of their friend – after torture and execution – had been buried in a borrowed tomb.
They knew only that Jesus had died and that the tomb was empty.

Refrain: Where is the Body (verse 1)

Opening Prayer
L: Let us pray.
P: O merciful God, we look to Easter as the defining event of all time. We look at the empty tomb as proof of your power and evidence of Jesus’ resurrection. We see that morning as a joyful expression of hope and, because of it, look forward to our own resurrection into the new heavens and new earth
However, your word reminds us that all of that was still unknown in those early hours. For the Mary’s and Salome, the empty tomb was a symbol of the continued need to wonder what happened, and what it meant for them.
Give us fresh insight, we pray, into the depths of Christ’s resurrection and all that surrounded it. This we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The problem? I don’t like pain, and I’m a bit risk-adverse. You know what they say about curiosity… eventually it gets the best of you. (I’m ignoring what they say about curiosity and that unfortunate cat….)

Anyhow, this evening I read about a type of fire breathing that doesn’t use carcinogenic fuel and doesn’t taste downright awful, so… to make a long story short, I had to give it a try.

It’s still one of my first tries… but….

Fun, huh?!

CHOOSE RESPONSIBILITY is a nonprofit organization founded to stimulate informed and dispassionate public discussion about the presence of alcohol in American culture and to consider policies that will effectively empower young adults age 18 to 20 to make mature decisions about the place of alcohol in their own lives.

It’s a great organization that seeks to pass on the growing body of research regarding the problems of having a 21-year drinking age. If you haven’t heard of it, please look it up; most people make assumptions (often guided by MADD and other organizations) regarding the efficacy of such a late drinking age that, turns out, aren’t true.

Why am I writing about it now? Because Sunday, February 22nd, there will be a segment about it on 60 minutes. You can find more information about it here.
