Thanks for a thoughtful article, Tim.
Tim! This is wonderful advice I think I would do well to keep in mind. I especially as a young bull headed idealistic pastor will probably need to remind myself again of the bit about flags. I also really appreciate your thoughts on special sermons or preaching to particular individuals, I can imagine both being a temptation at times. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience life lessons!

Very good, Tim. Since I work in a regional medical center, I'll say another word about how folks dress. If you come to visit your hospitalized parishioners looking like a teenager in flip-flops, most likely the staff will treat you like a teenager in flip-flops (this is not a good thing, if you wish to convey some pastoral authority). And please, please do visit your parishioners in the hospital or at home, or wherever they are.

I would also say, having done hundreds of funerals, that conducting a "generic" funeral is sufficient reason for us to push you into the grave vault. Even if the family has said, "just give us a word, Pastor," it deserves to be a personal word, so do your homework. Even if the family is resistant to you doing your homework. Would you want a generic funeral?

No amount of contact by computer or phone will replace a five minute face to face conversation.
Buy a Pastor's Log. In it, write down the birthdays of every member of the congregation, and anniversaries, and, if you can get access to them, other significant days. Recognize these days when they come.
Say thank you more than please -- and if you're not a natural thanker, find someone who is, who can write you a weekly list of who should be thanked and for what.
Budget plenty of non-computer time. Do what you want with it, but don't spend it looking at a screen of any sort. (Guess I should have said non-screen time)
Take all the vacation you have coming to you, whether you think you need it or not. Sometimes you don't find out you needed it until after you gave it away.
Love your congregation. If you don't love them, get out and do something else. Don't just go somewhere else. Inability to love the unlovely will probably travel with you.
Read the Desiderata at least once a month.

Very nice! As you remind us so well, metaphors are important. They guide, for better or worse, and they reveal what people really believe.

I hope many take to heart the tending metaphors you lift up.
